In the entertainment industry, blacklisting occurs when a general decision is made to no longer employ a particular person. Blacklisting was all the rage in the red-hunting era of the 1950s, but it continues to occur for a variety of reasons. From drunk driving to be a diva, these celebrities are no longer hired.
Justin Bieber started his career in the best possible way: he posted multiple videos of himself singing and playing guitar on YouTube as a kid. Usher noticed this young man and realized his star power. Soon Bieber was performing all over the world. Of course, as he got older and became a teenager, he started losing his temper and making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
This mugshot nearly destroyed the Internet. He had gone from having a sweet, sing-songy voice to being a rowdy teenager who ignored the rules. He spits on people, peed in buckets, fought with paparazzi and argued with people who looked at him funny. He eventually turned his life around and is now married, but it was a rough few years for him, and no one wanted to work with him.
Katherine Heigl was a very famous actress at the height of her occupation. The demand went to her head, and she became a typical Hollywood diva. She’s been called “the worst to work with” both on and offset, and that’s Something she would never want to say on the record.
According to those who worked with her, she constantly questioned and edited the script without the director’s permission. She wouldn’t leave the trailer if she didn’t get her way, wore unique outfits onset that the stylists didn’t approve of, and of course, had an intimidating attitude toward lower-level employees. Heigl is blacklisted.
Mel Gibson became famous for his roles in numerous popular films and eventually became a household name. His career took a bad turn after he was involved in a terrible accident while driving drunk. It wasn’t his last DUI, nor his last alcoholism …. Something worse happened.
Worse, he launched an intense anti-Semitic tirade against the press. No wonder he was immediately blacklisted and put out of work for ten years. Now he is slowly getting his career back on track and accepting some roles, but he has left a bitter aftertaste for many.

People were surprised that a first-time actress could get so much recognition, but it all came down to whether fame had driven her crazy. Eventually, she was blacklisted.

Hitchcock was furious that Hedren had rejected his sexual advances and promised her she would never work in Hollywood again. He then decided to freeze her contract for two years and sell it. Not surprisingly, the idea of Hollywood and movie stardom left a bitter taste in Hedren’s mouth, and she gave up acting to work for the animal rights movement.
Cee-Lo Green became very popular when his pop hit “F*** You” was played on radio stations. He had found fame under the name Gnarles Barkley with producer Danger Mouse but decided to quit. He grew in popularity and even became a judge on “The Voice.” Although he was a nice guy, he also seemed to have a tough side, which couldn’t have been further from the truth.
In 2011, Cee-Lo tweeted a homophobic tweet to a record producer who harshly criticized one of his songs; he lost his spot on “The Voice” and ended up in legal trouble. She’s fallen behind in the music world but is working to become relevant again.
The most tragic thing on the “blacklist” is when an actor loses the star power she once had, and that’s what’s happening now for Elisha Cuthbert, best known for her roles on “24,” “House of Wax” and “The Girl Next Door.” Her role as Kim Bauer on “24” was a hit. She ranked first in Entertainment Weekley’s poll of the “20 Most Irritating Characters Ever.”
She last appeared in a movie in 2017, when she played Mary in Goon, the last of the enforcers. Her only role is in Netflix’s Ranch; her only role in 2020 was in the Drag Race in Canada.
Kirk Cameron successfully worked his role in Growing Pains and gained thousands of fans. It didn’t take long for him to decide he wanted to be a spokesman for American Christians. Unfortunately, he chose a more dangerous path than others and used his platform to proclaim his hateful and extremist views under the guise of Christianity.
Cameron never failed to tell the media writing about him that he despised “sinners,” including homosexuals and women. No wonder Cameron has been unable to find work in Hollywood and is probably blacklisted.
No one will ever forget the downfall of Roseanne Barr. She had a very popular show that was a revamped version of the original show that was so popular. However, Roseanne ruined it by tweeting racist things about Barack Obama’s former senior advisor.
To make matters worse, she argued with people about whether or not she was acting racist and continued to say more racist things until ABC quickly canceled her season and renewed the show without her. She has since been blacklisted.
Rose McGowan is known for her work on popular TV shows and movies, such as Charmed. She was the first woman to come out about the infamous Harvey Weinstein and the Hollywood elite he had in his pocket. McGown was one of the actors stitched up and blacklisted, but she played an important role in bringing his heinous acts to light.
Before it all came to light, Weinstein blacklisted McGown from working in Hollywood and even tried to bury his film. Fortunately, Weinstein paid for his crimes, but McGowan has yet to pay for hers. Since then, she still hasn’t landed a role.
Stacey Dash began her profession as an actress, activist and talk showing hostess. She became best known for her role in Clueless, which is still popular. At one point, she took a drastic turn from left-wing activism to far-right activism.
Dash was openly racist and was fired from Fox News. She was subsequently fired from Fox News but has since attracted attention from other media outlets and social media. She has been outspoken about her hatred of the LGBTQ community and Jews. Hollywood will never hire her again.
Lawrence has committed some of the biggest sins to get anyone in Hollywood (or any woman) blacklisted, but they haven’t yet. He hasn’t been the most liked man for a while, and he’s said some nasty things (like completely ignoring his counterpart’s sexual harassment lawsuit and calling her “shit”), but he hasn’t stepped on anyone’s toes yet.
Lawrence, however, has been booted from “Saturday Night Live” for good. She interrupted the live show to preach how important feminine hygiene is. Not only was it super inappropriate, but it was also very creepy. He was also “casually” homophobic and tried to hit on female cast members on set. Unfortunately, the rest of Hollywood is still unaware of his actions.
Vanessa Marquez’s story is a sad one; the actress became famous after co-starring with Jerome Clooney as Wendy Goldman on ER. After her contract with the show ended, she could not find work and began publicly accusing Clooney of blacklisting her. The accusations turned out to be false, but that didn’t stop her.
Most people didn’t know that her mental health was seriously deteriorating; on August 30, 2018, she had a psychotic episode and called the police to her home for a wellness check. They eventually shot her dead after she chased them out of her apartment, brandishing scissors and a BB gun.

Thora Birch was a child star who had a string of hits, most notably in Hocus Pocus. Birch was a popular child actress, but her career took a turn when her father attacked someone on a movie set. Unfortunately, this did not bode well for her acting career, and she never appeared in another blockbuster after that.
Jim Caviezel is best known for his role as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson. The film grossed millions of dollars and was highly praised in the film industry. Unfortunately, the overdramatization and ultra-violent imagery met with fierce resistance from the Christian community. Caviezel somehow absorbed most of that anger and felt the repercussions. He has not been offered any film roles since.
Isaiah Washington may never work in Hollywood again because of his blatant homophobia. He called a colleague gay with a derogatory term on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. He was suspended and attacked his colleague again after “Grey’s Anatomy” won a Golden Globe.
Sondra Locke got her to break in the 1960s when she began dating Clint Eastwood, who was essentially the Godfather of Hollywood. After their violent breakup, Eastwood made sure she never worked again. His ability to blacklist her that wreaked havoc on his entire career prevented him from achieving the stardom he had before their relationship.
Dorothy Parker worked as a screenwriter for famous directors in the 1930s and 1940s. She collaborated on some of the best films of the era. However, her alleged ties to communism cost her her entire career, and in 1949 Parker received a 1,000-word letter admitting that she had been blacklisted for reasons related to the allegations.
Queen B is not blacklisted, but two of her songs have remained wholly banned in China.” ‘Run the World’ was deemed inappropriate by the Chinese government and has since been banned on any platform. She was similarly banned from entering Malaysia for refusing to comply with the country’s strict dress code.
The story of Vanessa Williams is one of triumph and tragedy. She had crowned Miss America in 1983 but was later wholly humiliated when old nude photos surfaced. She was stripped of her title and banished to the shadows of show business. She eventually released a song that brought her back into the limelight, but she has never crowned Miss America again.
Interestingly, only Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks made the blacklist. The band did well overall, but Maines was not even allowed to appear on television. She openly opposed Bush’s invasion of Iraq and made this known publicly. This made her unpatriotic and prevented her from working with many television networks.
Snoop Dogg has done just about everything. Hollywood still loves him, especially for his show with Martha Stewart. Interestingly, he has been prevented from entering several countries because of his fondness for marijuana. The rapper is not allowed to enter or tour any of the banned countries. The latest addition to the list is Norway.
Orson Welles was an enormously popular figure in the film industry. His film Citizen Kane is still considered one of the most important films of all time. At the time, the U.S. government was a bit leery of the film. So much so that the FBI launched an investigation to determine Welles’ connection to communism.
Lloyd Bridges is most popular for his role in Airplane, but most people didn’t know that he was blacklisted in Hollywood for a short period. Like many actors of the 1950s, he was blacklisted for his obvious ties to communism and socialism. He was. Because of his outspoken liberal views, he was suspected of having ties to Russia and communism. Ten years later, he finally managed to convince people that he was not a Russian spy and made a great career.
Despite being very popular, Lee Grant was suspected of being “anti-American.” She was asked to testify against her husband before the House Un-American Activities Committee, which she refused. It was an especially difficult experience for her. Somehow, she and her husband were able to prove their innocence.
Like multiple women before her, Ashley Judd obtained blacklisted by Harvey Weinstein. She had rejected his advances on several occasions. He was so fed up with her rejections that he made sure he never worked in Hollywood again. Fortunately, she had enough evidence to take him to court and settled for millions of dollars. She was removed from the backlog.
Randy Quaid is a unique individual. He starred in major films such as Independence Day and National Lampoon Christmas Vacation. Has continued on a downwards spiral since the 1990s. He now posts politically motivated and incredibly bizarre right-wing extremist videos and stories. He has been checked several times for destruction. He was blacklisted after his wife, Evi, sent nude photos of him with a gun to every member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Corey Feldman has been an interesting character to keep track of in recent years. He spoke very openly about an underground pedophile ring long before confirmed the truth, and a top Hollywood executive (who was probably involved!) blacklisted him. Unfortunately, it was a long struggle before I understood him.
Banks is a feisty rapper who has had her share of dramas with every major musician. She was finally “canceled” after making offensive, homophobic, fatuous and narrow-minded comments on Twitter. No one misses her.
Everyone knows Lindsay Lohan’s fall from grace. The child actress struggled with drug and alcohol abuse throughout her teenage years and into adulthood. She was difficult to work with, never on time for shoots and obnoxious to people. She was banned from working in Hollywood, but maybe that was for the best. She now lives in Dubai.
The “16 and Pregnant” star is incredibly selfish and has taken a major turn by mistreating anyone who disagrees with her. She was also booted from “Teen Mom” for causing drama on and off the set.
Perez Hilton, who took his surname from Paris Hilton, is a “journalist” who acknowledges celebrities. He’s not a paparazzi, but he uses his photos for everything. He makes his money exclusively from gossip, whether it’s true or not. Most utmost people don’t want to work with him.
Courtney Love has never seen the same way after Kurt Cobain’s death. People doubted her involvement and wondered if she had killed him. so tarnished her name in Hollywood movies that she was blacklisted. However, the music industry has a different opinion of her.
Unlike other Golden Age actors, Pete Seeger was suspected of being a member of the Communist Party, and he was. He was sentenced to ten years in prison but was soon released.
Tara Subkoff is another of Weinstein’s victims. Her story is the same: she rejected his advances and was blacklisted after deciding he was fed up with her. She has yet to return to the film industry.
Lena Horne was an important part of the “Red Scare” at the time. She was also accused of being associated with communism and was blacklisted for her liberal views. She was able to make a career out of the corporate world of Hollywood and was very successful. Unfortunately, never revealed her name.
Josephine Baker became famous for her banana skirt dance in the 1920s. She was also Betty Boop’s model. She held dual French and American citizenship and was the subject of communist rhetoric. At one point, she was denied entry into the United States. A few years later, the ban was lifted, but she preferred to stay in France with her 12 adopted children.
Katharine Hepburn was arrested and imprisoned by the Un-American Activities Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. They did everything they could to catch the star actress, but she was never convicted of treason and was released.
As the father of cinema, Charlie Chaplin was exiled from the United States for his unpatriotic charitable works. After his return, the FBI secretly tracked him for years.
Arthur Miller, a famous playwright, was arrested after publishing The Crucible, a story about witch hunts in the 17th century. In the story, he made a seemingly direct comparison to conditions in the film industry. He was interrogated by authorities and manipulated into admitting the true intent of the story.
Judy Holliday spent her career as a pretty girl who was “dumb.” During the Red War, she was accused of having ties to communism (who wouldn’t be?), but she knew how to use her cocky attitude to defend herself against the communists. She almost made the same mistake as many others, but she saved herself from it by playing dumb.
Burgess Meredith played the Joker in the Batman films of the 1950s. He was also a popular character in The Twilight Zone. During the Red War, he was blacklisted for his alleged ties to communists. However, he was not involved with communism and, fortunately, there was enough evidence to clear his name.
Without Lucille Ball, Hollywood would not be where it is today. But that doesn’t mean her name wasn’t the subject of a red hunt. She was asked to testify for HUAC but was never arrested. She was once suspected of Communist ties, but, frankly, she was too busy to worry about such things.
Actor John Ireland was blacklisted after being defamed. He got into more trouble when he defended himself against the person who had libeled him. However, it turned out that he was telling the truth, and a settlement was reached, restoring his career.
Nat Hyken was blacklisted because he hired an actor who was blacklisted. Hollywood didn’t appreciate his idea of going against the grain of the times.
Langston Hughes was a popular poet of his time. He was blacklisted because his poems were occasionally published in communist newspapers. Unfortunately, these newspapers did not have permission to use his poems, but those who blacklisted him did not care.

Gypsy Rose Lee was a legendary show dancer in the 1950s. She was arrested while attending a communist demonstration. She was arrested and was soon blacklisted by the entertainment industry.
Leonard Bernstein is considered one of the greatest composers of all time. He, too, was suspected of having communist ties. Although he never proved it, he was blacklisted by a major studio. However, this had no major consequences on his career.
